Attractions of the City

Itanagar is known to have been built on the ruins of Mayapur, a city
that once served as the capital of the 11th century Jitri
Dynasty.
The rulers of this dynasty built many forts, the most important one
being the Ita Fort.
Constructed by King Ramchandra of this line, it is the most striking
architectural remain of the ancient town. There is a yellow-roofed
Buddhist Temple on a hilltop in the town. It is surrounded by
beautiful gardens that provide a panoramic view of the temple.
The Gyaker Sinyi Lake (Ganga Sekhi Lake) which is 6km from the temple
is well worth a visit.
Jawaharlal Nehru Museum has an interesting collection of historical
relics, musical instruments and traditional implements.
¤ Naharlagun- Excursions
10km from Itanagar is the important town of Naharlagun. The major
attraction of this town is the Polo Park that has rare botanical
specimens. Within the park is the Handicraft Centre run by the
Industry Department of the state. The centre offers a wide range of
shawls, carpets and carved caskets. Fine cane and bamboo works are
also on display at the centre.

Bomdila provides an excellent view of the snow-capped Himalayas. The
place also has some Buddhist gompas, or monasteries. Numerous apple
orchards abound in the town. The town also has a craftcentre. |
