Feroze Shah Kotla in Delhi

Feroze Shah Kotla

The Imperial City of Feroze Shah Feroze Shah Tughlaq (1351-88) built the enormous city of Ferozabad in 1354, which contemporary historians say extended from the present Ridge area (Pir Ghalib) in the north to Hauz Khas in the south. Well, it is not entirely impossible, since Feroze Shah Tughlaq had a hunting lodge in the northern extreme and in the south, he had built a madrasa and his own tomb (see the Hauz-i-Alai complex). Although there are no remains of any such city-wall.

¤ The Ruins of Feroze Shah Kotla

At one time Feroze Shah Kotla had lain on the banks of the Yamuna river – as to that, what wasn't – now it's just outside the Delhi gate of Shahjahanabad or old Delhi, beyond the busy ITO crossing. This used be the Kushk-i-Feroze, the palace of Feroze Shah Tughlaq. Nothing much survives of it now, except for the Ashoka Pillar, as in of King Asoka of the Mauryan empire (which Feroze Shah Tughlaq had brought from Topra, Ambala to his capital). Apart from which there are the broken down ruins of the Jama masjid (Friday mosque) and a round step well (baoli), which is two floors deep and has antechambers at each level. An interesting account has been given in contemporary historians of how the Asokan pillar was brought to the capital. The connoisseur of buildings Feroze Shah Tughlaq took great pains to see to it that no damage came to the ancient structure.
The Jama Masjid is reached by a gateway from the north and rests on rows of rooms which are on the ground floor. In the times when the Tughlaq occupied the throne of Delhi it used to be one of the largest mosques going, and Timur, who invaded India just after Feroze shah Tughlaq's reign, mentions praying here.Be a part of this cultural city and enjoy every aspect of monumental heritage of Delhi on your travel vacations in India.
