The World- reflecting Moseque, the Jama Masjid, Delhi is both an architectural masterpiece and moreover epitomizes a pristine congregation of individuals rooted in prayer. Undoubtedly a landmark this place of worship offers both a commanding view of the world and is looked upon with deep reverence and respect not only from the lay faithful who offers prayers but also by the scores of visitors who set foot in the square. This monument situated in the erstwhile capital of Shahjahanbad stands as a testimony for all time nestled in the Old Delhi high-rises. This place of worship but also prides itself in being one of the last architectural monuments built in golden era of the Mughal Empire.
Jama Masjid History
The history of Jama Masjid is as fascinating as the other monuments built during the reign of Emperor Shahjahan. Built in red sandstone and marble and by more than 5000 skilled artisans the moseque was intended to be spacious and glorious place of worship. Built at an expenditure of Rs 10 lakhs construction was under the supervision of the Saadullah Khan the Prime Minister of Shahjahan’s court. In keeping with style of other monuments of the time, this monument was lavished upon with the best and the sturdiest of materials, elaborate and distinctive design be it architecturally and also intricate designs like calligraphy and motifs.
Jama Masjid Architectural Style
Jama Masjid’s Architectural style is a seamless confluence of both Hindu and Mughal style of architecture. Though to an outsider the Islamic style of building may overshadow the other Hindu influences but the blend in seemingly visible in the motifs and intricate carvings that can be seen in the monument. Starting from the outside the moseque has three great gates, two towers and two 40 meters high minarets which are constructed of both strips of sandstone and marble. The main entrance of the Masjid on the eastern side faces the Red Fort. This gate was probably used by the emperors to enter the mosque. The tower on either side of the Jama Masjid is made of five storeys. Each storey of the monument has a projecting balcony and the adjoining edifices are intricately decorated with calligraphy. The first three storeys of the Jama Masjid is made of sandstone, the fourth of marble and the last storey is also made of sandstone. Intricate carvings are embellished on the walls of the mosque all bearing verses and quotation from Holy Scripture. This monument is known for its pillared corridors and doomed pavilions which run on either side. The main highlight of the mosque inside is the central hall of prayer. Built with a magnificent façade the insides of the monument are blessed with 11 cusped and decorate arches the. This place of worship has three domes sturdy on the outside and intricately decorated with black and marble stripes on the inside that bear a distinct resemblance to the Nizamuddin Dargah. The Jama Masjid capacity is such that it can accommodate close to 25,000 people at a given point in time.
Jama Masjid Friday Moseque-
Though the Masjid is known as the Masjid-I Jahan- numa, the later name of Jama Masjid refers to the Friday afternoon congregational prayers offered by muslim and hence the name Juma or Jami Masjid. The Friday Jammat or the Friday congregation attracts scores of lay faithful who come to offer prayers. The prayer on festive days like Eid ul Fitar and Eid-al-adha are indeed a sight specially the scores believers prostrating the main court yard.
Jama Masjid relics -
This mosque houses some of the most precious reliquary of the Muslims. The Jama Masjid relics include a replica of the Quran written on deer skin, a red hair strand of the prophet, his sandals and footprints. These relics have been preserved in the moseque. All these relics were bought to India by Taimoor Lang the emperor which was handed over to the Mughal emperor. Shahjahan shifted these relics from his royal palace to the Moseque. These relics are on display in the moseque and can be seen by public from 09 am to about the time of time of Magrib Salah (namaz) that is just after sunset.

Beyond the intimidating entrance, there is a vast
courtyard measuring nearly 100msq at the Jama Masjid India. It is flanked by pillared corridors
which run all along the courtyard and have domed pavilions in the middle
on either side.
The prayer hall, measuring 61m by 27.5m, is quite a marvel. It is has a
magnificent façade of eleven arches, the central one being higher
than the others and serving as the entrance. It is topped off by three
magnificent domes which are richly ornamented and have black and white
marble stripes much like the Nizamuddin Dargah.
