The annual Pushkar Festival is celebrated with pomp and enthusiasm. Pushkar fair (Pushkar ka mela) is an annual five day camel and livestock fair that is held in the town of Pushkar in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is a sacred town for the Hindus. The charm of the sleepy lakeside town is that it is captivating despite being one of the most inhospitable surroundings. So much so that it can be called an oasis in a desert. The festival is celebrated in honor of Lord Brahma. The town also holds the distinction of housing the only temple in the world that is dedicated to the Lord Brahma, the Jagatpita Brahma temple. The festival is celebrated on Karthika Purnima. This day is believed that Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu came to bath in the lake Pushkar. So devotees consider it auspicious to take a holy dip in the river. Apart from the various religious observance that are associated with the temple there are a number of cultural activities that center on this temple. People from all over congregate to participate in the five day festivities. Even in terms of accommodation some people prefer in staying in tents named after the villages and the places they belong to. Apart from that the other festival attractions of this mall include cattle fair and competition along with the various recreational and cultural activities.
Pushkar festival Attractions-
Cattle Competition- There is various cattle competitions involving cattle. The festivities may not go well with various animal rights group but the main attraction is the camel and the cattle race. There are interesting races firstly the camels are made to carry things from the start to the finish line. Apart from those there are races with racers on camel’s back. Cattle Fair- The cattle fair is also important part of the Pushkar festival. Cattles are decorated in colorful manner to attract prospect buyers and tourist. Buyers and sellers come in close and free contact with each other and barter trade.
Other festivities- Apart from that cattle race and fair there are a number of shops and stalls dotting the area that sells colorful clothes, textiles, fabrics and colorful ornaments. There also music and song exhibitions.
Time of Celebrations: It is celebrated for five days from Karthika Ekadasi to Karthika Purnima, the full moon day of the 15th Day of Karthik (October to November) in the Hindu calender.
