Situated in North Goa this Indian town was once capital of the Portuguese empire that ruled Goa.  The city however was constructed by the sultanate and in later years served as the Portuguese capital till the 18 century and later deserted on account of the plague. The place also housed the Viceroys Palace till iy shifted base permanently to the now capital city Panaji. The Name Velha Goa was given by the erst -while rulers to signify. However the city today is oblivious or abandoned but is counted as a world heritage site by the UNESCO and is visited by scores of tourists per year.

It may take almost a week or more to see the churches of Goa in detail. The other places to visit include the  temple of Brahmapur that is surrounded by verdant fields. The Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and that seeks migrating birds. Divar which is also a part of Velha Goa that houses plenty of Old mansions that are fast disappearing.

There also a number of other activities that tourist can engage in while staying at Velha Goa. These include water rafting and water skiing and also angling. The best time to visit during the whole year in the feats of St. Francis Xavier that is celebrated with much fervor and pomp. Old Goa is connected  to other cities and there are frequent bus services to Old Goa form major towns in Goa.

Old Goa is more than what meets the eye. An in explicable magnetism that draws believers and non believers alike. The holy sacrosanct and at the same time once forlon city today enjoys the most highest fervor in the minds of tourist that keeps tehm coming back again and again as well as also new travelers.
