¤ Chittaurgarh
Chittaurgarh's Vijay Stambh, made of sandstone, best symbolises its
legacy of unshaking pride, as it stands till date against the time.
The formidable Chittaurgarh Fort, with its numerous tables and
Chhatris whispers tales of invasion and resistance. Visit the palace
of Rana Kumbh, where the queen Padmini leapt into flames, preferring
death to dishonour. and see a rare temple dedicated to Meera,
legendary devotee of Lord Krishna.
¤ Udaipur
often called the Venice of the East, Udaipur is surely one of the
most romantic destinations in India. Built on the banks of lake
Pichhola, the city is best-known for the two exquisite palaces that
appear to be floating on the lake. of the two,one is now the Hotel
Lake Palace. Other attractions include Manek Mahal or Palace of
Pearls, the Fateh Sagar Lake, Sahelion ki Bari (Royal Gardens) and
Shilpagram, - a planned village-cum-exhibition centre of traditional
craftspersons and artisans.
¤ Modhera
Sometimes called Mundera is situated on the banks of the river
Pushpavati about 25 kms. from Mehsana. Modhera is famous for its Sun
Temple, the best example of Solanki temple architecture in the state
and one of the most magnificent monuments in Gujarat.
¤ Patan
The historic town of Patan (founded in 1796 A.D.) is situated on the
river Saraswati, about 51 kms. from Mehsana. Originally known as
Anhil-Vad-Pattan it flourished during the Solanki dynasty and has some
interesting monuments. The streets of its older quarters present an
interesting look with a melange of carved balconies, lintels of Muslim
havelis, marble domes and the canopies of the over 100 Jain temples.
Patan's most famous personality is Kalikal Sarvagna Hemchandracharya
the man responsible for giving Gujarati language its first grammar.
Patan is celebrated world over for its exquisite Patola silk Saree.
¤ Junagadh - Sasan Gir
Visit the city to Junagadh with its Nawabi History. On the foothills
of the nearby Girnar Hill see 2000-year old inscriptions etched by the
great Indian monarch-turned-mendicant, Emperor Ashoka.Once lions ruled
the earth. Today, outside Africa, Sasan Gir is the lions' only natural
habitat. Covering over 1400 sq. km. India's largest wildlife sanctuary
is actively fighting to protect the Asiatic Lion from extinction.
Other wildlife includes peacocks and panthers, deer and antelopes,
hyenas, and the ubiquitous langoor - the black-faced Indian monkey.
¤ Somnath
Situated at the westernmost tip of Gujarat, the Somnath temple
dedicated to Lord Shiva, is believed to have witnessed the creation of
the universe. This shrine was destroyed seven times by invaders from
Asia Minor, and rebuilt each time. It is said the temple was first
built in gold, later rebuilt in silver, then in wood, and finally in
stone.
¤ Ahmedpur - Mandvi
Soak up the sunshine at the sunswept Samudra Beach Resort at Ahmedpur
-Mandvi. The silver sands and cool waters beckon marine life
enthusiasts and water sport lovers. Water skiing, surfing, speedboats
and water scooter rides will provide you wit a thrilling beach
holiday.
¤ Diu
Diu, like Goa, was also a Portugal colony until 1961, and has a
unique character somewhat like a Mediterranean village. Stroll along
the historic fort said to be built by Vasco da Gama, and the
imposingly serene St. Paul's Church. Six kilometres from Diu is the
Nagoa beach - unspoilt, and far removed from the stresses and strains
of Urban life.
¤ Palitana
You will travel to a palace that emanates devotion and spirituality.
An essential pilgrimage for one of India's most austere religion -
Jainism - Palitana is built atop the Shatrunjaya Hills, and the $ Km
(3,572 Steps) ritual walk to the top brings you to a different world.
A magnificent complex of 863 richly carved, upto 1000-years old,
marble temples that remain invariably cool despite the blazing heat
outside. For those who can't climb all the way, we have organised
chairslings, carried by two men to take you to the top.
¤ Ahmedabad
A city with many architectural influences from Moghul to Le Corbusier
and Rajputana to Louis Kahn, Ahmedabad attracts architecture fans from
the world over. See the Adalaj step-well with its fascinating history
of aggression and resistance. The father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi
chose Ahmedabad to launch his non-violent agitation for Poorna Swaraj
from his Ashram, built on the banks of the river Sabarmati. Visit the
Calico Museum - a priceless rare collection of traditional textile
designs and pieces from all over India. For shoppers, Ahmedabad offers
a glittering array of folk art and crafts in textiles, wood, stone and
clay. For nine days and nights before Dussera, see Ahmedabad celebrate
Navaratri A festival dedicated to the goddess Amba, when men and women
dress up in their traditional best and dance garba and raas till late
every night.
¤ Jaipur
Founded by the Rajput king Raja Jai Singh, Jaipur is the capital of
Rajasthan "the land of rajas" Called "the pink city"
for its rose coloured sandstone architecture, Jaipur is also truly a
Shopper's Paradise - choose from precious and semi-precious stones,
chunky, traditional silver jewellery, block printed and tie-and-dye
fabrics, miniature paintings, and curios that carry a image of a regal
past. Specially worth visiting is the magnificent Amer fort, where you
can actually ride on a caparisoned elephant in the style of the
Maharajas - a fitting finale to a memorable journey.
