Spiti River of Himachal
¤ Spiti - A Pristine River
The Spiti river is a 60 miles long river flowing across the valleys
of Spiti and Lahaul. The Spiti valley has recieved its name from the
Spiti river. Spiti river starts from the glaciers situated above the
Lahaul valley. The river passes through the Kunzum pass, which is
aproximately 16000 ft above the sea level. Many small rivers like Pin
Cholmo, Gyundi, Rahtang, Ulah, Lungse, Mane, Surahi, Hanze, Tagling,
Thumpa Lumpa, Kaza, Lingti, Parechu and Tabo join Spiti en route. In
Kinnaur, the Spiti river merges with river Sutlej.

Spiti Valley
The river Spiti passes through Spiti and Lahaul valley. It is
surrounded by high mountain ranges and snow capped mountain tops.
During summers, the flow in the waters of the river and its
tributeries becomes very fast and dangerous due to melting of
glaciers. But in winters the River gets frozen. The river flows
through the beautiful and scenic spots in Himachal Pradesh. The
mesmerising Lahaul and Spiti valley owe much to the river.
¤ Adventure sports
River Spiti is known for the adventure sports offerings. River
rafting and canoeing can be done on the river. Government and some
private tour operators can arrange for river rafting and canoeing in
Spiti. A prior permissions from the Governing bodies is required by
the foreign nationals before visiting Spiti valley for any adventure
sport activity.
¤ Activities
Picnic spots: The banks of Spiti are beautiful picnic spots. The vast
rocky terrains, free flowing Spiti, beautiful scenery all around and
the cool temperatures of the area makes it a perfect picinc spot.
Camping: Camping during night can be equally adventurous. The cold
environment, high mountains, snow capped hilltops and the
bon-fire....a thought is enough to excite anyone.
