¤ Location of The City
 Mangalore
is located 357km west of Bangalore in a district of Dakshina Kannada.
The city is also a gateway to this Beach Country- with its virgin and

The lofty Western Ghats on the east and the vigorous Arabian Sea
thriving along its western shores guard Mangalore City. The
magnificent National Highway No 17 runs parallel to the sea for over
95kms in the district. Nowhere does the distance between the highway
and the sea exceed more than a few kilometers.
Nestling on the coastal edge, Mangalore enjoys the privilege of being
the major commercial center with its own modern port. The city is a
center for the exporting coffee and cashew nuts to other countries.
Its major industries are beedi's, tiles, cashew, coffee and fishing.

Mangalore is located near the backwaters formed by converging

¤ History
Mangalore - The city derives its name from the presiding deity
Mangaladevi, the goddess of fortune. During the Vedic period, the
harbor town of Mangalapuram or the city of Mangalore was situated in
the western part of the land of Baratha. The region was given as a
reward to sage Parashurama by Samudraraja, well known for its Kadali
fruits. Mangalore is the land of enchantment of Sahyadri Mountains,
where the great sages Kanva, Vysa, Vashista, Vishwamitra and other in
the past spent their days of meditation.
¤ Places of Interest
Mangaladevi Temple
Mangaladevi Temple located about 3km from the city center is
dedicated to Goddess Mangala Devi . Bhargava - one of the devotees
prayed to the Goddess, for many years, seeing his full devotion mother
goddess was immensely pleased and told him that she would inhabit in
his place as "Mangala Devi" to be worshipped by devotees.
The devotees and tourist throughout the year visit the temple, place
was known as Mangalapura which later became Mangalore.
Kadri Temple
Lord Manjunatha is the main deity in the temple located at a
distance of 5km from the city center. The temple was constructed by
Machendranatha in the - 10th Century. Main attraction of the temple is
the continuos flowing of holy water from the "Gomukha"
(mouth of cow's idol). People from all faiths come to pay their
devotion and to wash in the holy water as it is believed to have
medicinal values for curing skin diseases.
Temple is also famous for its cave attractions, Pandava Guhe. Legend
has it that Pandavas of Mahabharata came to this cave & stayed
during the time of their exile. Another unique feature of this temple
is that the temple tank or the "Kalyani" situated much on
much higher level than the temple, normally the tank is constructed
below the height of the temple.
Gokarnatheshwara Temple
The temple is dedicated to Lord Gokarnatha, located about 2kms from
the city center. It is the foremost specimen of modern architecture
founded by the Billawa Community of Mangalore. People visit the temple
daily to seek the blessing of the Lord Gokarnatha.
Venkatramana Temple
The temple is dedicated to Lord Srinivasa also known as Venkatarama.
Located on the Carstreet, the temple dates back to the medieval age.
This holy shrine is thronged by thousand of devotees coming from the
near and far a places to say their prayer and obeisance to the deity.
Maha Maya Temple
The holy deity of the temple is Kali- the Goddess of Destruction.
Legend has it that the temple is about 2000 years old, people have a
strong belief in the deity who cures and take away all their pains and
sorrows.
Ullal Beach, Mangalore
Located about 12kms from the city center, is the vast coastal line
of Mangalore arrayed by some of the most exquisite, clean beaches in
the town. Ullal beach is the most tourist-visiting destinations of
Mangalore with lots of beach activities taking place daily. The beach
houses the renowned Summer Sands Resorts equipped with all modern
facilities besides, it also offers splendid beach sport facility.
Taneerbhavi & Panambur are the other beaches in Mangalore located
near the Mangalore Port.
¤ Excursions From Mangalore
Pulikula Nisarga Dhama - 11 kms
Located at Mudushedde town northeast of Mangalore, Pulikula Nisarga
Dhama makes an excellent tourist destination, just an half an hour
drive from the city center.
Moodabidri - 35km
Situated towards the northeast of Mangalore, Moodabidri holds the
charm of housing the famous Jain Temples. The temples are famous for
their exquisitely carved out 1000 -pillared shrine. One of the most
deserved tourist attractions.
Karkala - 52 kms Northeast
Main attraction of the town is statue of Bahubali and the St.
Lawrence Church. The statue is a magnificent colossal statue of
Bahubali erected in the center of the town. St. Lawrence Church is
constructed during the region of British Empire and is much known for
its large halls and splendid carving archways.
Varanga
Near the city is situated a small town -Varanga, much famous for
Jain Temples, the town makes an important Jain pilgrim center.
Katil - 27km
Nestling on the banks of the river Nandini, the temple is adobe of
Goddess Durga Parameshwari. A much visited site by the devotees due to
its glory and fame.
Jamalabad - 40km
Jamalabad is much known for the famous fort constructed by Tipu
Sultan which was named after his mother Jamalbee.
Udupi - 58km
Udupi lies to wards the north of Mangalore. The town is famous for
renowned Krishna Temple housing a huge Gold Chariot richly adorned
with jewels. The main attraction of this temple is the 'Kanakana
Kindi' -a small window through which Krishna is believed to have given
darshan (appeared) to his ardent devotee. It is also the home of Saint
Madhwacharya who preached his teachings to his follower almost 700
years back. Another attraction of Udupi - it is also famous for its
food specialty, 'Masala Dosa' the famous menu in South Indian cuisine
is originated from this small town.
Venur - 65km
Venur - 65km from Mangalore, is well known for its Bahubali statue.
Malpe Beach
It is 66km north of Mangalore. The beach has a long coastal track
with untarnished magnificence of nature, making it a favorite hangout
zone for the locals.
Kollur - 140km
Kollur is adobe of famous Mookambika Temple throng by thousands of
devotees.
 Dharmasthala

The place houses the famous temple of Lord Manjunatha, one of the
most holy places of Karnataka. The temple is located in a small the
village of Dharmasthala, in Beltangady Taluk of South Canara district.

Subramanya - 100km
Kukke Subramanya is located in the scenic environs of Dakshina
Kannada districts. The place is famous for Lord Subramanyaswamy

attraction is its Car Festival, every year the festival is held on
'Margashira Shuddha Shashti' by offering prayers and chanting mantras
in the temple.
