Modern Kerala Trip
The State of Kerala, as we know it today, came into existence as a
Malayalam -speaking state unit after the reorganisation of the Indian
States in 1956. Way back in 1957, it became a state with the first
ever democratically elected communist government in the world.
Ever since, the political scenario has been dominated by the
Communist parties and the Congress.
The state government has been formed by either of these parties, or
by coalitions led by one of them. Another thing worth mentioning is
the fact that for the most part, this state has had coalition
governments that have functioned smoothly without any major
disturbances.
Presently too, a coalition government is in power, led by the
Communist Party of India (Marxist), with Mr. E. K. Nayanar as the
Chief Minister.
