Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala, is built over low hills near the seashore. Though a well-developed capital city, it is not noisy. Trivandrum is clean, green and peaceful. Derived from Tiru-Ananthapuram, Thiruvananthapuram means the city of Anatha. Anatha is the sacred eternal snake that shelters Lord Vishnu (the Preserver in the Hindu Holy Trinity of Creator-Preserver-Destroyer) with its hood.

The present Thiruvananthapuram district was part of the erstwhile Travancore State.According to historical records, the State of Travancore was divided into three administrative units during the reign of Maharaja Rama Verma (a.d.1758-1798) – Vadakkemukkom, Patinjharemukhom and Tekkemukkom. Tekkemukhom roughly corresponds to the present district of Thiruvananthapuram, also one of the most preferred holiday destination in Kerala.
