India, or ' the Bharat' position itself
in South Asia and falls in 8.4 N 37.6 N latitude and 68.7 E - 97.25 E
longitude. The state is blesses Himalayas on the noth west and noth
east. The state is bounded by the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and
the Bay of Bengal. The state has well defined geographcal and
geological unit.
¤ India's Dimensions
Geographically, India is as vast as it is varied. As the seventh
largest country in the world, it spans an amazing 3,214km from north
to south, and 2,933km from east to west. The coastline stretches for
over 7516.6 km. If we mease ure through scale, the total geographical
area of India would be 32, 263 sq kms and occupies 2.4 sq kms of the
earth surface.

¤ Geographical Regions
India as a state is divided into
four major geographical regions
The Great Himalayan Mountain Ranges : This is one of the most
desirable place for trekkers and mountaineers. The regions encompasses
the various Himalayan ranges whcih extends along the India's northern
and north eastern border in a 2410 km curve. Himalayas are the tallest
mountain system in the world.
The Indo - Gangetic Plain : The Indi- Gangetic Plain lies in
the Himalyas and the southern peninsula which includes the valley of
Bhramputra, the Ganges and the Indus river and their branches. The
eternal city of Varanasi; the beautiful Sunderbans; the splendid Taj
Mahal and the charming Khajuraho temples fall in this region.
The Desert Region : This region comprises of the Great Desert
and the Little Desert. Rajasthan and Gujurat falls in this place. The
region is quite popular for its art and architecture and you can see
maginificent forts and palaces here.
The peninsular region of the South : South India or the
southern peninsular region is surrounded by mountains. In the north
lie the Vindhya and the other mountain ranges that seperate the Deccan
from the northern plains.
¤ India's Geographical Layout
While China lies beyond the northeastern border of India, with the
Himalayas towering between the two countries as a colossal divide,
Nepal forms a perfect Himalayan niche between India and China. To the
west of India is Pakistan, an independent nation today that was a part
of India till 1947. The southern fringes of the country are washed by
the massive blue-green expanse of water - the Indian Ocean - that
distinguishes India from its neighbouring landmasses.
The Arabian Sea hems in the western coast of India, while the Bay of
Bengal meets the eastern coast, demarcating India from Myanmar and
Thailand. Close to the southern tip of India lies the island-nation of
Sri Lanka, the once-mythical domain of Ravana, the demon king who
abducted Sita in the Hindu epic, the Ramayana.
India's total area of 3,287,263sq km is divided into 26 states and 6
union territories that include snow-capped peaks, dry and cold
deserts, luxuriant fields, rock-faces, mangroves, bare stretches of
earth, and a range of alpine to impenetrable tropical rain forests.
