¤ Aizawl (Capital of Mizoram)
The capital is on a 4,000 feet high ridge surrounded by valleys and
hills. The Tropic of Cancer runs through the capital. The city has a
temperate climate throughout the year that makes the place an ideal
hill destination. Due to its altitude and the environment with gentle
contours and greenery, the place is a relaxing and serene getaway.
Anyone visiting Aizawl will be taken aback by the emerald Tlawng River
Valley in the west and the dazzling Turial River Valley in the east.
Aizawl is both political and the cultural center of Mizoram. It is
considered to be the commercial hub of the entire state as all the
commercial activities are centered here. Some of the worth visiting
destination at Aizawl are Tamdil Lake, Bung (16 kms away) and Dampa
Wildlife Sanctuary (A tiger reserve).
¤ Mizoram State Museum
The State Museum is situated on McDonald's hill at Zarkawt. The
museum exhibits a wide array of costumes, artifacts and historical
relics. Glimpses on this traditional clothes, artifacts and historical
relics can reveal much of the culture and the frontal representation
of heritage of the tribes. Some of the weapons that are displayed here
have been used in battles fought many years ago.
¤ Palak Lake
The lake is situated in the southern part of Mizoram of the
Chhimutipui District. It is a picturesque oval shaped lake, also one
of the biggest lake in the state. A variety of water birds and water
lilies taking this lake as their natural habitat cover a large part of
the waterfronts. The lake is believed to be created as a result of an
earthquake or a flood. Legend also has it that the village that was
once submerged deep under the water still remains intact underneath.
¤ Phawnpui
The majestic peak which is also known as the Blue Mountain has a
dominating presence in all parts of Mizoram. The peak with its flora
and fauna is a favourite site for the trekkers and the
adventure-seekers. It is 300 kms away from the capital city and close
to the Myanmar border. A variety of fragrant herbs, rare species of
orchids and rhododendrons are found growing here. For the adventurous
people wanting for lodging before the thrill, Sangau and Vawmbuk
village have accommodation.
¤ Champhai Town
The arresting sight of a beautiful scenery of a virgin forest can be
seen from the town. The tourist can also view the hills of Myanmar. It
also serve as the trade center between India and Myanmar. The natural
small streams or the natural purified water coming out of the rocky
portion of the Vaphai Hillock called the Fiara Yui and the Melancholy
Place of the legendary girl Lianchhiari on the south of Champhai along
the Indo-Myanmar border is a very interesting site for the tourists.
¤ Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary
This is a sanctuary where the animal lovers would find very
interesting and thrilling. It is situated in the western part of
Mizoram and is adjacent to another sanctuary by the name of Dampa
Wildlife Sanctuary. For visiting the sanctuary, 240 kms have to be
travelled from Aizawl through the Thenzawl village. The sanctuary
covers an area of 50 sq. Kms and acts as a corridor for elephants
which migrate form Bangladesh. Tiger, leopard, hoolock gibbon, leaf
monkey , sambar, barking deer and a variety of birds can be found in
the sanctuary.
