Places To See in Nagaland
Amazing it is, that the state has been under the influence of the
outer world and still able to retain the ethnicity of the various
tribes. The Dimapur market with the bustle and hustle of a commercial
center is one of the major places as compared to the capital of
Nagaland, Kohima. Ruzaphema, a scenic beauty and Nagaland State Museum
can be named for visiting.
¤ Kohima (Capital of Nagaland)
The state capital which is also a hill station is a 3 hour drive from
the Nagaland airport at Dimapur (district). Kohima, at the altitude of
1,495 meters above sea level, also serves as the place where the
Japanese Army and the British fought for the country's independence.
¤ Nagaland State Museum (Kohima)
The museum is a world of treasure where the Naga culture through
history can be accessed. Some of the priceless items are gateposts,
statues, pillars, jewellery and a ceremonial drum that looks like a
dug-out war canoe. There is an exhibition of birds and animals of the
Northeastern states at the basement.
¤ The Catholic Cathedral (Aradura Hill)
This Cathedral is one of the biggest Cathedral in the North-East and
is an important landmark in Kohima. The Cathedral also has the biggest
cross in India made of wood.
¤ Dimapur
The airport in the state is at Dimapur which is at the altitude of 195
meters above sea level. It is the commercial center of the state on
the national highway no.39 and is well connected with the neighboring
states of Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura and
Mizoram. In this heart of the city, the last relics of the Kachari
Kingdom can be seen. With all the markets here, it is quite a tourist
attraction.
¤ Ruzaphema
This place is situated 5 kms away from Dimapur on the Dimapur-Kohima
road. Its colourful bazaars and a wide range of tribal handicrafts
exquisite in style is a place ideally suited for leisure and
recreation.
