Meenakshi Temple, Madurai
At the distance of 7 km from Bhubaneswar lied the hills of Udaygiri and Khandagiri. The place is famous for its magnificent Jain Cave art. The caves are the creation of Kharavela around 1st - 2nd century BC for Jain monks who use to lead a secluded life praying and indulging in religious studies. The famous caves of Hathigumpha (elephant cave) in Udaygiri, RaniGumpha (Queen's cave) also in Udaygiri, spacious courtyards and remarkably steered embellishment are the witness to the elegance the architectural styles had achieved as early as the first Century BC.
