Shergarh Fort
Named after Sher Shah Sur, the Sultan of Delhi in mid 16th century,
Shergarh fort was built much earlier in the 10th century and was the
site of religious fervour in the name of Lord Shiva the Destroyer.
However, the fort was originally built as a form of defence against
the rulers of Mewar who were bent upon attacking Bundi throughtout the
12th to the 17th centuries.
Developed As Jains & Hindus Learing Center
Gradually the place lost its importance and became a learning centre
learning for Jains and Hindus. Till the 16th century
Shergarh was held by the Chauhanas until Sher Shah, in his drive to
oust Humayun from India, came across the fort and captured it. It
reverted back to the rulers of Kota with the demise of the Afghan, and
became an important strategic stronghold for their battles against the
rulers of Mewar.
Carved Images of Fort
Similar to Gagron fort in its bearings, Shergarh fort too is a jal
durg (protected by water) with the river Parwan forming a moat around
it. The walls of the fort have a distinct style, for never before were
walls decorated with carved images and statues of Hindu gods and Jain
motifs. It is believed that the fort is now a haven for dacoits. |
