Luni Fort Jodhpur
Distance : 35km from Jodhpur
¤ Also Known As Fort Chanwa
Situated about 35 km from Jodhpur, Luni is a small town, which is
mainly reputed for its marvellous citadel called Fort Chanwa. Carved
out of red sandstone which was brought from Jodhpur, the fort has an
array of courtyards, pavilions, passages, friezes, beautifully
sculpted latticed windows, topped by a roof top which provides a
panoramic view of the hamlets below and the Thar desert beyond. The
fort looks spectacular at nightfall with its its huge gates and
protective walls standing out proudly under the night sky. All in all,
the fort is a wonderful example of the symmetry and grace of Indian
architecture of the 19th century. The hamlets neighbouring the fort
are mainly inhabited by artisan who carve wood, metal and into works
of art, carrying out the skills passed down to them through the
centuries by their ancestors. You get the feeling that life and the
pace of living could not have changed for the people very much since
the medieval age.
¤ Fort Converted into Heritage Hotel
The fort like many others all over Rajasthan has been converted into
a heritage hotel with all the modern amenities available. The credit
for this goes to Dalip Singh, the youngest son of Maharaja Umaid Singh
of Jodhpur and his wife Rani Madhu. If you visit Luni there is no
better place you can stay.
