Yumthang Valley
¤ Attractions of The Valley
The
Yumthang Valley in northern Sikkim is simply beautiful. Located at a
distance of 135km from Gangtok, the gently sloping valley is at an
altitude of 12,000ft and is now open to foreigners.
The region is known for its hot sulphur springs of Yumey Samdong
where the spring water is diverted into pools and the infrastructure
required for a good soak is available.
The valley also has the awesome Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary (for
more details on the sanctuary, see the Wildlife section).
Unlike elsewhere in the state, the rhododendron blooms in the
Yumthang Valley are not only red but also in a variety of colours.
Naturally, the best time to explore the valley is in May, when the
wild rhododendrons dot the alpine meadows.
Travellers require an Inner Line Permit to enter the Yumthang Valley.
This can easily be acquired through a local travel agent at Gangtok or
from other towns. |
