Places To See At Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal is one of the most revered hill stations of south India.
It has every thing that can lure a tourist. The hills station has
lovely lakes, beautiful parks and mesmerizing waterfalls, making it a
natural paradise. Apart from the natural beauty there are many other
attractions present here, that cannot be missed.
¤ Berijam Lake
The
Berijam Lake is one of the beautiful places famous as a picnic spot.
Rich in natural beauty, the lake is located 21kms away from the
Kodaikanal bus stand. This lake provides drinking water to nearby
Periakalam town.
¤ Bryant Park
Situated on the eastern side of the Berijam Lake is the Bryant Park.
It is famous for flowers, hybrids and rafts. There are varieties of
flowers present in a glasshouse. In the month of May, a horticultural
show is held here.
¤ Shenbaganur Museum
The Shenbaganur Museum is located about 5-Km from the lake. It is
maintained by the Sacred Heart College. This museum is among the best
orchidoriums in the country having more than 300 species of orchids
along with a wide variety of birds.
¤ Boat Club
A new boathouse was constructed here in 1910, but a few tourists were
allowed only from May 1929, who availed boat ride as temporary
members. Later on they were extended to the public and to the tourists
in 1932. Boats like T.T.D.C, Kodai boats, Carlton boats are available
for hire.
¤ Kodaikanal Lake
Kodaikanal Lake is a famous lake of this place. It is an outstanding
man-made lake. It has a star shape and is spread over an area of sixty
acres. With lush greenery all around it is a major attraction of
Kodaikanal. The boat club here offers several pleasure and racing
trips.
¤ Pillar Rocks
There are three boulders within the city limits, standing shoulder -
to - shoulder vertically measuring to a height of about 122 metres. It
presents an out of the world site.
¤ Coaker's Walk
The Coaker's Walk was named after Lt. Coaker, who prepared the map of
Kodai. It is situated about a kilometre from the lake, which runs
along a steep slope on the southern side of the Kodai. Beautiful views
of the plains can be seen from here.
¤ Telescope Houses
There are two telescope houses set up at Kodai, which enable the
visitors to have a panoramic view of the valley and the nearby towns.
¤ Kurinji andavar Temple
This temple is a sacred temple where the presiding deity is Lord
Murugan. It is about 3.2-km away from the Kodai lake. In Tamil
literature "Kurinji" means "Hilly Region" and "andavar"
means God. This temple offers lovely views of the northern plains and
Palani Hills.
¤ Silver Cascade
The exotic Silver Cascade waterfall is located on the Ghat Road about
8-km from Kodaikanal. The overflow of Kodai Lake comes down here as
180 feet high falls. A good place to spend some quite hours.
¤ Bear Shola Falls
This is a popular picnic spot located 1.6-km from the lake. The path
to this fall is quite rugged. Above the falls, Bears used to drink
water, which is why it has been named Bear Shola Falls.
