Places To See At Ooty
Ooty also known as the "Queen of hill stations", is a
natural paradise. Nature has bestowed all the goodies on this heaven
like hill station. Here you can find green hills, free flowing
waterfalls and lush green meadows, all making this place a treat for
your eyes. Besides the natural beauty this exquisite hill station has
much more to offer. There are many places worth visiting in Ooty.
¤ Botanical Garden
The beautiful Botanical Garden of Ooty was established in 1848 and is
being maintained by the Horticulture Department of the Government of
Tamil Nadu. This garden has wide variety of plants and include Italian
and Japanese sections. Here you can find different types of roses,
imported shrubs, rare flowering plants, eucalyptus trees and several
old trees. A highlight of this garden is the fossilized tree trunk,
about 20 million years old. This garden is also the venue of a summer
festival held during the month of May every year. The major
attractions of the festival are flower show, cultural programmes
related to classical arts, and adventure sports like trekking.

¤ Ooty Lake
The Ooty lake was built in the year 1825. It is about 2.5-km-long.
The Ooty Lake is a place worth visiting, where you can go for boating
and fishing. But for fishing you need a prior permission. There's also
a racecourse located near the lake and a mini-train takes the
tourists/visitors around the lake.
¤¤ Dodabetta Peak
Dodabetta, the highest peak of the district has a height of 2,623 m.
It is situated at about 10 km from the Ooty town. This peak is one of
the most outstanding view points around Ooty. The top of the peak
looks absolutely mesmerizing since it remains covered by mist most of
the time. But on a clear day, you can view the landscape as far as the
plains of Coimbatore and the Mysore plateau.
¤ Rose Garden
The Rose Garden is situated about 3 to 4-km away from Charring Cross.
These gardens are sprawled beautifully over an area of 10 acres of
land having around 2000 variety of roses. This garden lies on the way
to the boathouse.
¤ Mini Garden
There's also a Mini garden, situated on the way to the boathouse
along with a children amusement park. A snack bar is also available.
These gardens are maintained by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development
Corporation Limited.
¤ Ooty Lake
The Ooty lake is situated at distance of about 1-km. It is a man-made
lake which very eye-pleasing. This lake was constructed in 1824 by Mr.
John Sullivan, the then Collector of Coimbatore.

Stone House
This stone house, a worth visiting spot was built by John Sullivan.
It was occupied by the Principal of the Govt. Art College and was
called as Kal Bangla (stone bungalow) by the tribals.
¤ St. Stephens Church
The Stephens Church is the first church built in Ooty in the year
1820. It is believed that the wood used in the construction of this
church was brought from Tipu Sultan's Lal Bagh Palace in
Srirangapatnam after his final defeat. The highlights of the Church
are a clock tower, nine tubular bells and a gallery.
¤ Deer Park
The Deer Park at Ooty is a scenic park situated at a distance of
about 1-km from the Lake. Definitely, a worth visiting site.
¤ Government Museum
The government museum is situated at Mysore Road in Ooty. It contains
items of tribal objects, district's ecological details and
representative sculptural arts and crafts of Tamil Nadu. This museum
was established in 1989, for imparting education benefits to the
people residing and visiting the Nilgiris district.
¤ Hindustan Photo Films
Among the major industrial units of the district, The Hindustan Photo
Films, is located about 5-km away from Ooty railway station. It is
sprawled over an area of over 300 acres, located near the Ooty
golf-links on the Ooty- Mysore road.
