Kedarnath temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (Swayambhu,
or self-manifested lingam,
Shivas symbolic phallus), stands on a huge moraine in the
Mandakini Valley which used to be under a massive glacier centuries ago. The valley is dominated by the Kedarnath peak (6940m) and surrounded by the Kedar Dome (6831m) and Sumeru Parbat (6331m). The Chorabari Glacier at the base of the Kedarnath peak is the source of the Dudh Ganga stream that unites with three other streams gushing forth from holes in the glaciers, to form the sacred Mandakini River, is idle for Panwali trekking holidays. It is believed that the grey stone temple was constructed by the Pandavas after the war described in the epic, the Mahabharata, to mourn the killing of their Guru (teacher) and relatives. Legend has it that the Pandavas went to Kashi (Varanasi) to wash away their sins but Lord Shiva wasnt impressed. So He fled to Guptkashi (Gupt means hidden in Hindi Shiva fled to a place which later came to be known as Guptkashi) in order to avoid the Pandavas. The Pandavas didnt give up and chased Shiva till Kedarnath where the Lord disguised himself in the form of a bull and joined a herd of cattle to hoodwink the Pandavas. The Pandavas were high on determination. The giant-sized Bhim (one of the strongest of the Pandavas) stepped on the hills on either sides of the pasture, and Arjun (the archer among the five Pandavas) made the cattle pass between Bhims legs. All the cattle except Shiva in the guise of the bull, complied. Bhim bent down to catch hold of the bull but the Lord buried Himself in the earth. The hump of the bull remained there while the horns emerged at Pashupatinath (Kathmandu, Nepal). Shiva was finally won over by the determination of the Pandavas and absolved them of their sins.
