Yamunotri TrekThe Source of River Yamuna4 Day Trek Altitude: 3185m District: Uttarkashi Yamunotri,
the source of the River Yamuna, lies in the northwest Himalayas of
Garhwal, and is dominated by the Bandarpoonch peak (6316m). Yamunotri
trek on the mountains of Yamunotri in Himalayas will give you most
adventurous travel trip to Yamunotri. It is one of the four
dhams (pilgrimage centres
for the Hindus, the other three being Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath)
of Garhwal.In Indian mythology, it is believed that Yamuna is the daughter of Surya (the Sun God) and the twin sister of Yama (the God of Death), and a bath in her holy waters would guarantee an easy death and lead to Moksha (salvation). Main Attractions Trek to Yamunotri temple, a 19th century black marble deity in the Yamunotri temple. This temple was destroyed by heavy snow and floods, but reconstructed later this century. There are numerous hot water springs near the temple. of these, Suryakund is considered to be the most sacred. Pilgrims cook rice and potatoes in the hot water of these springs by wrapping them in a piece of cloth and dipping them in the water for a few minutes only. The meal thus prepared is first offered to the deity and then distributed among pilgrims as prasad (offerings blessed by the deity). Its a steep climb to the source of the river about 1km from the temple. Itinerary DAY 1: Drive 125km from Mussoorie to Hanumanchatti (2400m), with packed lunch, across the Yamuna bridge, Nainbagh, Nowgaon, Barkot, Gangani, Sayanachatti and Ranachatti, all along the River Yamuna. Dinner and overnight stay at the GMVN rest house or the village hotels. There is a small market at Hanumanchatti with shops selling grocery, confectionary and woollen items. DAY 2: Breakfast and trek 14km, with packed lunch, to Yamunotri (3185m). This is a beautiful trek along the river with snow-covered mountains on all sides, and two small villages, Phoolchatti (2453m) and Jankichatti (2575m), en route. While Phoolchatti is 5km from Hanumanchatti, Jankichatti is about 8km away. There are tea stalls in both the villages. Dinner and overnight stay at the GMVN rest house or in tent. DAY 3: Breakfast and trek 1km to the source of the river. Trek back to the temple and further down to Janakichatti, with packed lunch. From here, a short trek of 1km across the river leads to Kharsali that has an ancient temple of Someshwar, the finest in the area, and offers a beautiful view of the mountains. A trek from Kharsali leads to Phoolchatti from where it is 5km to Hanumanchatti. Dinner and overnight stay at the GMVN rest house or a village hotel at Hanumanchatti. DAY 4: Breakfast and drive back 125km, with packed lunch, to Mussoorie. Best Time for Treks: April to mid-June, and September to mid-November. |
