Kanpur Historic Information
Under the Mughals, Kanpur was included in the Oudh Subah (province of
Oudh), one of the 21 provinces the Mughal Empire was divided into, at
the time of Aurangzeb. Later, it came under the rule of the Nawabs of
Oudh who, for all practical purposes remained independent of the
tottering Mughal Empire, after Aurangzebs death.
But Kanpur shot into prominence during the Indian Revolt of 1857-58.
Sometimes called the First War of Indian Independence, the Revolt
dealt a severe blow to the very foundation of the British Empire.
In spite of its failure, it paved way for the future course of
nationalism in India. Though the Revolt broke out as a mutiny by the
Sepoys, it gradually brought into its fold other sections of the
society as well.
At Cawnpore, the insurgents revolted under the leadership of Nana
Saheb. But during the course of the Revolt, a tragic event took place
at Sati Chaura Ghat in which the insurgents opened fire and massacred
innocent British citizens without any provocation.
