City of the eastern lights Guwahati is often referred to as heaven on earth. This is because of the city epitomizes the beauty and the gorgeousness of nature in its sublimity and also is filled and blessed with natural places to visit which itself is a marvel and wonder. Situated on the eastern edge of the Himalayan Mountains, Guwahati is filled with natural places and religious places to visit. Set among the beautiful hills of the north east the city has developed in the recent times as a popular and premium tourist’s destination on India’s tourist map and at the same even in the north eastern region of Assam.
Kamakhya temple- Situated on the Nilachal hill at an altitude of 800 feet above sea level more than a temple the complex houses a number of temples that are dedicated to various deity. The main temple is dedicated to the Kali Devi temple, Bagala, Chinnamasta, Bhuvanesvari, Bhairavi and Dhumavati. These deities are all forms and contemplations of the Devi, the mother of Creation. Apart from that there are also five temples dedicated to the Lord Shiva and three temples dedicated to the Lord Krishna. The temple complex exudes an ambience of peace and devotional fervor and as such is devotees and visitors feel completely at ease and have a celestial feeling. The services in the temple begin early in the morning and the evening preparations and services are completely by early evening with the Sandhya Puja.
Temple of Hajo- The temples of Hajo offer devotees a unique confluence of beauty and divinity. One of the ancient temples situated about 2.5 kms from Guwahati. The Madhav temple is the most revered pilgrimage destination. The temple was destroyed during the years of Kalpahar reign that was said to have destroyed most of the temples in the India. Another temple was built in place of the ruins of the temple and Lord Krishna deity is revered here . The vicinity of the temple is also regarded as a holy and sacred by the Buddhist who believe that it was at this very place that the Lord Buddha attained the highest form of a spiritual being that is Nirvana.
Powa Mecca- Powa Mecca is considered an important place of worship especially for the Muslims visiting the shrine. The temple has a lot of significance and religious symbolism. A inscription stone in the temple indicates that this mosque built in the byzantine style of architecture was made during the time of king Shahajahan. The mosque also houses the remains of the evangelist of the Muslim faith who took the first efforts of spreading the faith in the Gyasuddin Ahulia. His tomb rests in the mosque. It is firmly believed that the sand from and holy earth from Mecca was used in the construction of the temple.
Navgraha Temple- As the name itself suggest the Navgraha temple is dedicated to the nine celestial bodies of the solar system. The temple is situated on a hillock and the is known as a center of astronomy and astrology. The main deities of the temple are to the nine planets of the solar system, namely Surya (the sun), Chandra (the moon), Buddha (mercury), Mangala (mars), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (Dragon’s head) and finally Ketu (Dragon’s tail).
Vasistha Ashram- Situated in the Sandhyachal hills of west Guwahati, Vasistha Ashram is an important and revered pilgrimage center in the city of Guwahati. Blessed and embellished with natural scenic beauty the place is preferred by tourist and devotees as it offers a perfect opportunity for prayer and concentrated meditation. Built by the king of the Ahom Dynasty Raja Rajeshwar the temple is still one of the remainder of the past and the rich heritage of the dynasty whole most of the others are in complete forlorn or are in state of ruins.
ISKCON temple- The ISKCON temple at Guwahati is one of the simplest temples in term of temples found in other parts of the country. The outer walls of the temples are simple and have no elaborate designs or texturing as seen in other temples. Guwahati Planetarium- Located at a prime location of MG road in Guwahati City. It is one of the best astronomical science centers that have aimed to recreate outer space so that tourists visiting can catch a glimpse of the outside environment. The main attraction of the planetarium is the sky watching sessions that vividly beings to life the movements of the environment in the rounded dome that is projected. The planetarium is visited both by residents and tourists alike.
Assam Museum- The Assam State museum is one of the most informative and at the same time growing museum and cultural centers in the north eastern region. The center has a definitive and conclusive compilation and collection pertaining to history, art and structures in and around Assam. The unique feature of the Museum is the time line that tracks events from the stone age to the modern and contemporary history. The center also offers a convergence of culture and tradition of the past years and is certainly a worthwhile place to spend a day, and also learn and explore more of Assam and the north eastern range.
