Tourism in the state of India is centered upon certain centers and as Goa has always been one of the key centers of tourism. Panjim or Panaji as it is called is the third largest city in the tiny state. Situated just by the banks of the river Mandovi, Panjim is not only the capital but one of the major ports of the city.
From a small island city Panjim has evolved from its humble beginnings a fishing city. Panjim means the land that never floods and such there were very few housing facilities available in the city. However the major part of the city’s development and evolution can be attributed to that of the Portuguese and the efforts of the India government to sustain it. Panaji as a capital city has risen above to standards that match the any Indian city at the same time has also evolved. Panaji tourism stems out from the fact that it offers tourists a time to relax and rejuvenate in a holistic manner. To an onlooker and traveler this may seem to be lazy capital city where life is enjoyed to the fullest and indeed so. The same can be said of Panaji a city can never be floored.
There are a number of tourist places to visit in Panjim. Within the city itself the most important place to visit is church Square and Public garden which are both reminders of the rich legacy of Goa’s colonial masters of the past. Panaji Adilshah Palace is also a place that is frequented by tourists. Another feature of the capital city is the Church of Immaculate Conception that is situated in the center in the city of Panaji. It catches the tourist eye because of simplicity and many travelers flock the winding stairs of the church. In the same lane there is also the Jama Masjid that also houses the Muslim College. The Mahalaxmi temple is also in close proximity and is the main temple of the city of Panaji. No travelogue or travel description of Panaji would be complete without beaches. There are several natural beaches around the three kilometer stretch of the capital city. The most important one is Miramar Beach that is widely visited and conducts a annual beach festival that has sand carving festival. There are number of water based sports like water skiing, rafting and available by the sea shore. At a distance of Miramar beach one can also see the ships that are at bay and serene picturesque marvels of the city.
Another stand out feature of the Panaji is the cuisine and the eateries. Apart from authentic Goan cuisine there is also other eateries that offer the best South Indian and north Indian dishes as well. In terms of transportation The city has an excellent transportation system that has well maintained roads and the traffic is also well maintained and there are fewer instance of rash driving. The modes of transport are also convenient and there are hired spots from where visitors can hire scooters which is the most popular mode in the city.
Accommodations too are not a problem. There are a number of options for accommodations. Like hotels, restaurants, inn as well as houses that can be hired while for staying. Depending and budget tourist can choose from a wide number of choices. The best Season to visit Panaji is from November to March. During the peak season however that is towards December is advisable to book and most hotels and in are booked during this season. The tourist Begins from November and ends with the Goa Carnival that happens in the February or March of the following year.
Panjim has favorable weather and are favourable, and since has a geographical proximity it maintains the sub tropical type of climate. The name Panaji means the city that is never floored and Panjim and its people exhibit the spirit. The good times never come to a grinding halt and tourists are welcomed with open arms.
