Thar Desert
This is one of the most important tourist’s destinations in Udupi. The characteristic feature of the beach is the rock basalt formations that are crystals in columns and as such is also hexagonal in shape. Situated at about 58 kilometers from the city of Mangalore. The beach is completely different in comparison to the other beaches in Udupi. Firstly the terrain of the beaches is not as soft as the other beaches and is also known for its hard and tough rocky terrain. The reason for this being the beach is filled with rock formations. Hence this beach is not suitable for swimming. It is said of the beach that the Great Portuguese Traveler Vasco Da Gama landed on the shores before enroute to Kappad, Calicut. He called the beached ‘El Pardon Santa Maria’. The northern most island of the beach is situated with one of the most expansive coconut grove that almost covers the entire coast.
