Places to see in Leh

Leh is also filled exotic locations in terms of places to be seen.  Different in terms of locations and exterior and landscapes but also different in terms of what the traveler perceives and there is more than what meets the eye. The land also offers some of the most ancient and long heritage that has been well preserved all these years and stands as a landmark and a testament of the times. What is known is wonderful but there is much that needs to0 be learned explored and seen.

Hence the places to see in Leh are:

Numbra valley- The parched and dry landscape on the northern side of Leh to the visitor may only seem to be desert and desolate piece of land but in fact as per those that they belong to the valley this is one of the most yielding and fruitful stretches in the entire region of Leh and this rightly so.  The Numbra valley is crisscrossed by the rivers of the Shyok and Numbra.  The valley is also known for the harvested crops of barley, apple and apricots that grow on the land. This is one of the quaintest and at the same time one of the most peaceful location. Apart from that the valley also bears the ruins of palace and other structure that are beyond any possible means of recognition.  However because of the differences that are offered tourists flock to the place.

Thiksey Monastery- Situated at 3600 meters above sea level the Thiksey Monastery is one of the most revered and sacrosanct religious places of worship and Buddhist monastery. The seat of the Holy see or the Rimpoche of Thiksey who is considered as the guide and the leader of Gelup school of thought. This monastery is considered as one of the most sacred and the most important among the ten shrines. This monastery also houses one of the largest Buddhist statues standing at 15 meters tall. About a 100 monks reside in this monastery and the 12th storied monastery complex is also known for its numerous stupas, statues, thankas, wall paintings, swords and a large pillar engraved with the Buddha's teachings apart from the sacred shrines and other precious objects to be seen.

Alchi Choskor Monastery- The complex, amid the village, overhangs the Indus far below. Because the whole complex is situated amid the village on a plain, your imagination of a typical monastery of Ladakh is ‘lost’. The glimpses of small temple houses with trees all around don’t give you an impressive impression, but soon you will be going through one of the richest historic treasure that Ladakh is proud of. These temples contain finest elements of Buddhist historic arts that is rare in a Buddhist world.

Monastero Chemre Gompa- Among the list of places this is also one of the most excellent and  this monastery is known to one of the most colorful and the most enchanting. The pathway of the monastery is one of the most enchanting of all locations that have set with barley field that sway to and fro and glimmer in the sun. the climb up to the Gompa is a daunting task but is certainly not difficult if there is a will. Once on the top tourists can get a panoramic view of the entire landscape.

Phyang monastery- Phyang Monastery of Ladakh is situated at a distance of approximately 40 km to the west of the Leh town. It belongs to the Red Hat Sect of Buddhism. The site where the monastery now stands was once a part of the numerous monastic properties, offered during the time of Dharma raja Jamyang Namgial to Chosje Damma Kunga. Another attraction of Phyang Gompa is its 900 years old museum. Its rich collection boasts of numerous idols, thankas, Chinese, Tibetan and Mongolian firearms and weapons, etc. The festival of Gang-Sngon Tsedup is held every year from 17th day to 19th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar.

Stok Palace Museum-  This is one of most well maintained and at the same time conclusive exhibition that documents the culture and the vast historical significance of the region over the span of many years.  The Stok Museum also houses some distinct memorabilia that is part of the collection of the Royal Family.  The Royal Family of Ladakh stays in the palace nest to the museum.  This is not only a preferred destination for history lovers but and also for tourist who wish to learn and understand Leh more.

Magnetic Hills- The magnetic hill is known for defying gravity.  This is also a mystifying experience and an enchanting experience.  The main area is known for the big signboard that cautions tourist about the place. There are instance and experience where in the car actually moves as normal in one direction then moves in the directly opposite direction. There are various explanations of the phenomenon and as such is an unbelievable experience.

Jama Masjid- The mosque is one of the biggest most important places of worship in the valley. Built by the emperor Aurangzeb. This is one of the holiest and the most sacrosanct places in the whole region and visited by tourist and pilgrims alike.

Prayer Wheels- Tibetan prayer wheels (called Mani wheels by the Tibetans) are devices for spreading spiritual blessings and well being. Rolls of thin paper, imprinted with many, many copies of the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum, printed in an ancient Indian script or in Tibetan script, are wound around an axle in a protective container. This place has the Buddhist Prayer wheels and tourists and pilgrims who visit this place feel at ease and a divine serenity while rolling these wheel. The feeling is simply spiritual and divine. Tourists can also buy prayer wheels that are availbel in the shops in and around the vicinity. Eacxh prayer wheel comes with  chants and hymns.

Vajra Bhairavi Shrine- The unique feature of this shrine is that the guardian deity installed here is open to devotees only once in a year, all other days the deity is kept in a closed sanctum. The walls of the shrine are adorned with many beautiful paintings dating back to 600 years. There are paintings that date back over 600 years on the walls of the shrine.

Leh Royal Palace- The royal family now resides in the Stok Palace. The old royal Leh place lies in ruins today and is under the care of the Archaeological society of India. The place has been excavated and several parts of the palace have been preserved.  The ruins palace is known for a wide variety of artifact and antiquity that are housed in museum. This place heralds the history and the hermitage of the rich that is well preserved for the future generations as well as tourists who visit the place.  

Leh has many wonderful and mystical things to offer the traveler. From being a piece of a paradise to having some of the most enchanting and wonderful experience that are simply hard to express.
