Thiksey Monastery
Situated at 3600 meters above sea level the Thiksey Monastery is one of the most revered and sacrosanct religious places of worship and Buddhist monastery. The seat of the Holy see or the Rimpoche of Thiksey who is considered as the guide and the leader of Gelup school of thought. This monastery is considered as one of the most sacred and the most important among the ten shrines. This monastery also houses one of the largest Buddhist statues standing at 15 meters tall.
About a 100 monks reside in this monastery and the 12th storied monastery complex is also known for its numerous stupas, statues, thankas, wall paintings, swords and a large pillar engraved with the Buddha's teachings apart from the sacred shrines and other precious objects to be seen.
