Places to see in Amritsar

Amritsar can well called the city with a glorious past and on the course of an evolving and developing future. Filled with effervescence in terms of places to visit and explore.  This city is known for many names the religious fervor and devotion, the land of historical prominence and the list goes. Apart from that the most distinguishing factor that is worth mentioning is the hospitality and the warmth of the people who extend this to the travelers.

Hence the places to see in Amritsar are:

Golden Temple (Harminder Sahib)-  Informally referred  to as the Golden temple is one of the holiest and the central place of worship for the  for Sikhs all over the world.  The Golden temple Amritsar was opened for public veneration in the year 1604. Though it is one of the most revered and adored place of worship for the Sikh Community it is also a harbinger for humanity and fraternal brotherhood that rises above the standings of class creed and religion and places all individuals as one. Built in the Sikh Style of architecture the temple is one of the most distinctive buildings in entire landscape. Another feature of the Golden temple is the holy pound that was advised by the third Spiritual Guru Amardass. This is a holy pond and pilgrims to the Harminder Sahib Shrine bath or takes a holy dip in the temple in the faith that their sins will be absolved. This practice goes on even when weather dips as low and the water is freezing cold.  Another feature that highlights of asserts the messages and the values which are the corner stone of the temple is the Guru Langar, this is a ritual that is followed even today whereby the faithful and pilgrims are fed.  The other features of the temple include the old Jubilee tree that is known to posses the miraculous powers of healing. There is only stipulation for the pilgrims that they are required to cover the heads. The ambience and the feeling of the environment is simply divine and the feeling of spiritual orientation is one of a kind.

Durgiana Temple- This is also one of the most revered temples of Hinduism. This place is also referred to as the sanctum of rejuvenation and renaissance of the faith. Built in the 1930’s this temple stands as an important and significant place of worship dedicated to the Goddess Durga. The temple is also known for the deep religious significance that it holds for the people and at the same time the influence of both religions that exhibits the very fabric of the country. The temple is ensaturated with an ambience of prayer and fervent devotion and  also known as repository of Hindu Scriptures.

Jallian Walla Baug- This Baug occupies a significant place in the history of India.  This is memorial site of the many innocent Indian martyrs who were killed for their peaceful assembly that was considered to be a crime under the royal Crown.  This is always remembered as an indelible incident in history of this country and is recorded in the true earnest.  This is living monument and the walls of the place still bears the bullet marks of the indiscriminate firing that was totally unwarranted. The sacrifice is still remembered  and acknowledged by the thousands who flock to this place.  

Ram baug- This is one of the most beautiful gardens in the city, designed in the exhibits of the palace. The baug is named after the founder of the city of Punjab.  This served as the summer residence of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. This place today serves as a museum that documents the entire history and has a conclusion collection of the same. On display there are also weapons that date back to the Mughal era and also a replica of the Kohinoor diamond that is on display for the tourists.

Ram thirth- Located at 11 km from the city of Amritsar Ram thirth is known for its deep historical and religious significance. This place is known for the number of the temple that are located in the vicinity that date back to the ancient times of the Ramayana. The place is known as the place where the Mata Sita devi resided and gave birth to her sons Luv and Kush.  There is also hut that is intact that is believed to be the place where Valmiki Rishi resided.  The place has a significance to the descendants of Kush and Sodhis.

Pul Kanjari- This is one of the heritage sites in the city of Amritsar. Said to be built by benevolent Raja Ranjit Singh. This place also has a pool and was frequented as a stopover for those visting and was a strategic point between Lahore and Amritsar. During the time of the Maharaja this place was a summer residence. Today at this site there is an old ruined fort and old pool. The quaintest and the quietness of the region is one factor that attracts tourists.

Jama Masjid Khairuddin- This place is also one of the most serenest and quaint locations in the city of Amritsar. The mosque was built by the Mohammad Khairuddin and is an architectural marvel in its self. Situated in Hall Bazaar also known as the historically as the place where the call against the British was made.

Samadhi of Gur Angad Ji- Situated at 30 km south east of the city of Amritsar this place is known as the final abode of Guru Goindwal Sahiob ji who served as the second spiritual guru. This monument was built in memory by Raja Ranjit Singh in 1815 and is also known for the scenic beauty and  the solemn solace of this place.

The historical Banyan tree- This is a wonder of nature and at the same time is also renowned for the historical significance. This tree in full bloom and with its vast extending branches is also one of the wonderful sights of nature to behold.  This place is referred to as the Namdahri Shaeed Samarak. This was the place where the British government hanged four of the khookas to death that revolted against the government for the hawking of beef near the sacred Harminder Sahib Dargah.

Wagah Border- Located at about 25 km from Amritsar this is the strategic point that serves as a boundary within the two countries of India and Pakistan.  Tourists visit this place particularly for the marching beach and the flag down ceremony that is done every day. It is military exercise that has been followed for years on both sides of the border and is also referred to as the beating retreat.  It exhibits the zenith and the fervor with which this military practice .

Khalsa College- This institution offers a fitting example of British architecture. With its well maintained architecture and well manicured lawns that adorn this college.  This offers the most perfect setting for the educational facility and is also one of the most best in the cities of Punjab.

Amritsar heritage Walk- This is a 3Km pathway that is situated with the walls of the city of Amritsar.  This is a guided view of the entire city through the pathways and the inner roads of the that are known for monuments of historical importance. The walk path covers key religious places of worship, heritage sights and introduces travelers to the culture and the cuisine.  Known as the memory lane through Amritsar history the place cannot be missed while on visiting Amritsar.

Amritsar offer tourists a confluence of both the new and is certainly one place that welcomes visitors with both arms open in all aspects.
