Places to see in Agartala

The city of Agartala is one of the most important tourist’s attractions in the state of Tripura. At the same time this hill station can also be attributed at being one of the most diversely populated cities not only in north eastern India but also among the counted cities of the country. The place is a natural sylvan habitation that is gifted with flora and fauna and spotless natural ecosystem. What renders that extra is the efforts of the authorities that have preserved the same and ably developed the facilities that are required which is a highly favored feature. The North eastern states have a lot to offers in terms of the tourism perspective and as such there is always something new.

NeerMahal- One of the poster attraction of Tripura is certainly the NeerMahal. NeerMahal in the literal context means water palace. Situated on the banks of the lake Rudrasagar, this quaint resort was once the summer abode of the Maharajas. There a number of peculiar factors about the Mahal. Firstly it was conceptualized and constructed by British Architects. The construction of this place on the lake is done in compliance to Hindu and Mughal styles of construction.  This is one of the only lake resorts in the city and architectural sense. Now open for visitors the Mahal offers a view of the bygone era and as such is a marvel both in terms of facades and lush green surroundings. The Maharaja used to travel by motor boat to reach the place and this is still preferred way of travelling especially by tourists visiting the place.  The Palace is cradle of royalty with all the finest finery on display.  Recently the tourist department announced that it would improve the facilities and open a museum in the palace, aprt form that there were also plans to renovate and organize a light and sound show for tourists.

Ujjayanta Palace- This Palace a symbol of the capital city of Tripura was constructed by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya. Completed in the year 1901 and roughly costing about 10 lakh the monuments are also an architecture marvel. The reason for this is the Palace confirms to distinctive styles and thoughts of architecture that is the Mughal, Indo Greek, and the pillars bearing the resemblance to the roman style, the domes to the South Asian etc.  The other features of the interiors include the tiles of the palace and the hand carved wooden roofs.  The two storied mansions highest dome stands at an astounding 86 feet high and as such are also is marvel. The surrounding are lush green and the spotlights and fountains add further sheen to this heritage royalty.

Kunjanban Palace- situated in a quaint hillock the Kunjanban Place is truly a marvel of natural beauty and an imposing façade. It served as the holiday and summer abode of the Maharajas and the prime reason for this was the natural beauty and the tranquility. During the pre independence era many stalwarts visited the place and stayed at the Palace including the great poet Rabindranath Tagore. Today it serves as the official residence of the governor, however tourists are allowed in the vicinity. The gardens of the place are simply majestic. The southern side of the Garden is named as Rabindra Kanan, after one of the most famous visitor.

Dumboor Lake- The Dumboor lake is a amiable and quaint aqua blue water body that is surrounded by green vegetation. The name Dumboor is synonymous to the small drums that were used to welcome and salute the Lord Shiva.  This massive water body sprawling around 41 sq kms. Apart from the grandeur of scenic beauty the place is also preferred for the various water sports activities that tourists can avail of.

Pilak- Pilak offers a confluence of both Hindu and Buddhist Heritage. Spread over and area of 10 Sq kms the region is known for its beautiful imagery and idols that are scattered in and around the place that bear deep meaning and related to Hindu and Buddhist faith and way of thinking.

Jagganath temple- The Jagganath temple is not on revered in terms of devotion but also for its distinctive architectural style. The temple is situated in between the water and has a pathway around the temple for devotees to complete the Pradhakshina.

Tripura Sundari Temple-  Also known for the picturesque surrounding and beliefs associated with the temple the Tripura Sundari temple is one of the revered tourists  destinations in the  Hinduism. Considered as one of the Shaktipeeth, the temple is in the form of a tortoise and  is constructed of reddish black stone. The temple also houses a idol that was used and kept by the Maharajas during their various expeditions. This is a revered place. As such at the southern end of the temple there is lake and  as such pilgrims offer puffed rice to the turtles and the fishes.  The festival of Diwali is celebrated with fervent devotion and solemnity and also with pomp and grandeur.

Fourteen goddess Temples- The Fourteen goddess temple is an important tourists place in Agartala.  The number fourteen has a very deep meaning while some may call it coincidence others belief it is an important part of the belief of the temple here. The temple is situated at about 14 kilometers from Agartala. It is also said that one who visits the temple once would return fourteen more times to the city.
