Darjeeling is a favored and flavored destination in the state of West Bengal. The reasons for this is the It is favored among all tousristis as a wonderful hilltop abode especially for the flavored hills form which emit the most aromatic and enchanting tea plantations. The hill town is on a lower range when compared to other tourist’s destinations around the Himalayas. But this in no way is a deterrent to the scenic beauty and the ambience is unparalleled and truly offers a journey to paradise of aromas.

Places to see in Darjeeling

The places to visit in Darjeeling include:

Tiger hill- Located at an altitude of 2950 meters above sea level and 13 kilometers from the town it si known for its magnificent view. This tourist’s spot offers the most magnificent and awe inspiring view of the hillside. The feeling of witnessing the sunrise feels the mountains are painting the sunrays palely ray by ray and finally ending on the rising to the fore. The sunset also appears to effect of the receding rays of paint that submerge into the mountains.

Observatory hill- This is one of the oldest and sites in the city of Darjeeling. It is believed that the hill housed a red hat Buddhist monastery stood at the very place. However the place was completely destroyed by the Nepalese. Despite this fact is a popular tourists destination.

Botanical Garden- This botanical Garden is also referred to as Lloyds’ Botanical Garden. This botanical houses a wide variety of flora specifies in terms of flowers and plants and also houses two well preserved and living fossils of Flora. This is a peculiar feature which many botanical gardens might not boast of. At the same the garden has a wide and well compiled collection of plants and flowers according to the plant kingdom. Just below the botanical garden is the Eden Sanctorum on an open slope and covering about 40 acres. Tourists are barred from carrying anything and are provided with a book and camera. The botanical also has a separate space for the green house.

Rock Garden and Ganga Maya Park- Situated at about 10 kms from the town. Rock Gardena and Ganga Maya Park are popular tourist attraction and at the same time also has been revamped over the years to facilitate tourists visiting. The main attraction of the place is boat riding. There are a number of stall and eateries that serve food to the visiting tourists. Visitors are allowed to take photographs. The scenic beauty and the ambience of tranquility in the verdant surroundings is difficult to literally explain in words. However while visiting it is advisable to arrange for transportation to and fro.

Nightingale Park/ Srubbery Park- The nightingale and the Srubbery park are two important tourists parks in the of Darjeeling. During the tourists season there are frequent cultural programs organized for the tourists. Situated at about 4 to 5 kilometers from Darjeeling station and walk able distance from Chowrasta. The park recently went through a series of redevelopment projects. There is a nominal fee for tourists who wish to take pictures. The best time for tourists visiting the place is in the evenings when the place is lit up and is abuzz with visitors.

Darjeeling Rangit Passengers cable Car Services- This passenger car service normally known as the rope way is one of the oldest passengers and tourists ropeways in use in the country. Over an expanse of three kilometers the ropeway connects Darjeeling with Singla Bazaar. The ropeway that is used has been extensively modernized form time to time and the and that too covering the entire phase of the distance. Travelling on the ropeway tourist can actually see the entire lush green regions and the aromatic and widespread landscape of the tea Gardens.

Happy valley Tea Gardens- No journey to Darjeeling would be complete without the Darjeeling Tea gardens. The Happy valley Tea Gardens offers tourists an opportunity to truly experience the refreshing ambience of the tea gardens that are lay like carpeted garden. The tourists are allowed a customized trip of the Tea gardens warehouse and factory. As per the  rules that gardens are closed for the public as there have been instance of tourists walking over the plantations and causing harm.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park- Dedicated to the former governor of West Bengal, this Zoological Park houses and is considered as one of the best zoos in the country. The Zoological Park also has the Tibetan wolf apart form that the zoo has also undertaken various projects to protect tourists endangered animals.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute- This institute was created after the Edmund Hilary and local hero Tenzing Norgay Sherpa scaled the heights of the Himalayas way back in the year 1953. This one of the oldest and the most finest and reputed institutes for mountaineering institutes in the country. It some of the best and known individuals in mountaineering like Bachendri Pal. The institute is under the wing of the Defense Ministry in the Government of India.

Tibetan Self help refugee center- What started as an institute to rehabilitate ten member committee evolved to become  one of the best Self help refugee centers. The centers is particularly known for the carpets, Tapestry and wood work that is famous and tourists visit this place particularly for this reason.

Darjeeling is also known of the Tibetan monasteries and places of worship

Bhutia Busty monastery- This Red Monastery is an important monastery and also follows the Vajriyana School of teaching of both Karyagud and Nijjingmapa.

Samten Choling monastery- This monastery belongs to the Gelupaka sect of the Vajriyana and is known as the Yellow hat. There is a tall stupa of the lama Angirika Govind form Germany one of the well known theologists for Buddhism

ISKCON temple Darjeeling- There are just two adjectives that can adequately sum up the ISCKON temple is beauty and serenity. The caretakers of the temple take care of the temple with keen reverence and devotion and is hence one of the most revered and hallowed places of worship in Darjeeling. The shrine has the deity of the Lord Krishna in his romantic form. This holy of place of worship exhibits the grandeur of modern architectural style and in compliance to the holy customs of Vastuhara.

Catholic Church- The Catholic Church, the largest church in the Kalimpong area, is a revered religious attraction. The church, built during the British rule in 1890. This church benefits the local Roman Catholic populace and has strong influence in the social and cultural activities of the region. The church attracts thousands of devotees all through the year. The Church is dedicated to the St. Teresa of the child jesus.
